Ashley Youth Detention Centre

The Ashley Youth Detention Centre is located in the north of Tasmania near Deloraine. It was established in 1999 and was previously known as the Ashley Home for Boys. Since 2013, it has become a government-run institution housing youth juvenile offenders of both sexes aged 10 – 18 years old. The Centre was established by the Youth Justice Act 1997 (Tas) and is the only institution of this kind in Tasmania. All juveniles between the ages of 10 to 18 who are held on remand, must serve time at the Centre.

The Centre accommodates 51 juveniles in four different units – Bronte, Huon, Franklin, and Liffey.

Since 2006, the Centre has been involved in an increasing number of allegations and matters involving historical child sexual abuse. In 2020, three staff from the Centre were stood down amid allegations of historical sexual and physical abuse including rape. Consequently, it was announced in 2020 by Premier Peter Gutwein that in 2021 the Tasmanian government would conduct a royal commission-style inquiry into the sexual and physical abuse of children/juveniles held in public institutions after historical allegations have been levelled at current and former state employees, including those at Ashely Youth Detention Centre.

Moody Law is currently representing various clients who have made allegations of sexual and physical abuse while they were placed at Ashley Youth Detention Centre.

We invite former victims of sexual and physical abuse at Ashley to tell us confidentially what information they may have, and we will explain what options are available to help with these cases.
