Brisbane Youth Detention Centre

The Brisbane Youth Detention Centre (“BYDC”) in Wacol, Brisbane was established in July 2001 as a replacement for the John Oxley Youth Detention Centre which closed in the same year and which was also located in the same area. BYDC is currently run by the Queensland Department of Justice and Attorney General. It accommodates females and males aged between 10-17 who have been refused bail and who are or have been subsequently remanded into custody, or sentenced to spend time in detention for an offence they have committed.

It has been reported in the media that various former inmates of detention centres around Australia, including the BYDC, have been sexually abused whilst serving time during their placement there. The sexual abuse on many occasions was done under the guise of strip searches and that these searches for alleged possession of banned items, became avenues for repeated incidents of sexual abuse. It is reported also that this has been the same pattern at other detention centres around Australia which has led to various state governments holding inquiries in recent years over the practice and legality of strip searches of children aged between 10 to 17 years of age.

Moody Law has in the past and is still representing clients who have made allegations of sexual and physical abuse against various State governments, when they were placed at a State-run detention Centre.

We invite former victims to tell us confidentially what information they may have, and we will explain what options are available to help with these cases.
