St Joseph’s College, Geelong

St Joseph's College, sometimes referred to colloquially as Joeys or SJC, is a Roman Catholic Independent school for boys, and is located in the inner Geelong suburb of Newtown. It is run under the auspices of the Congregation of Christian Brothers and provides education from year 7-12,

The College has become linked with allegations of child sexual abuse. This is in regard to Brother John Francis Tyrrell who had been charged in 2018 on 14 historical charges including indecent assault and buggery from his time teaching at Geelong’s St Joseph’s College in 1965 and 1966. This included raping a student 140 times and physically assaulting him with a leather strap. In April 2018, Brother Tyrrell (then 79 at the time) was jailed by Melbourne County Court over the charges and in 2019 obtained his release from jail when the Victorian Court of Appeal quashed his convictions. He had served eleven months behind bars.

Moody Law has in past represented and is still representing clients who have made allegations of sexual and physical abuse against members of the Christian Brothers at various schools and institutions around Australia.
